Merit's Cult Solo Shadow Gets a Luminous Upgrade: Is It Worth the Hype?
When Merit launched its Solo Shadow in 2023, it was an instant hit. The brand's minimalist approach to makeup, known for its easy, elevated, and effortless style, was perfectly embodied in this product. With its creamy, buildable texture and foolproof soft-matte finish, it was everything we'd expect from Merit. But now, the brand has taken it a step further with the introduction of the Solo Shadow Sheen.
The Solo Shadow Sheen is a buildable, self-setting cream eyeshadow that delivers a wash of pearlescent color. It's like the '90s glitter eyeshadows of late-night clubs, but made wearable for our adult lives. According to Aila Morin, Merit's Chief Marketing Officer, "We immediately started receiving comments and DMs asking for a version with shimmer, which led us to develop Solo Shadow Sheen – a buildable cream shadow that gives a hint of pearlescent color."
The Solo Shadow Sheen is formulated with jojoba extract for seamless blendability and all-day wear, and infused with microfine pearls for a flattering, multidimensional sheen. It glides effortlessly onto lids with either fingers or a brush. As someone with oily eyelids, I was pleased to find that it doesn't crease and has a perfect finish, neither too matte nor overly metallic.
For my first try, I swept the shade Iris (a cool, soft plum) across the lid, added Matchbook (a warm coppery burgundy) to the center and along the lash line for depth, and finished with a touch of Glacé (a frosty rose) on the brow bone and inner corners for highlight. Once it sets, it stays put all day, no budging, smudging, or creasing.
The Solo Shadow Sheen is everything we've come to expect from Merit: uncomplicated, wearable, and beautifully understated. It's officially added to my everyday makeup lineup. But here's where it gets controversial... Is the Solo Shadow Sheen worth the hype? It's a product that's perfect for those who want a hint of shimmer without the sparkle, but is it worth the price tag? I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments below.
