Homemade Pear Jam Recipe - Our Kerrazy Adventure (1)

My girlfriend introduce me to pear jam while I was visiting with her in Utah. I loved the taste! The spices used really set this jam apart. Ever since that summer I try to make pear jam in the fall. I know we are getting close to winter but I wanted to share this yummy recipe. It makes a fun gift at Christmas. Personally I love giving it as a teachers gift. And of course we use Kerr jars. It’s a well known fact that they are superior in quality. And I like their simple design.

Usually I watch for when pears go on sale and when my life isn’t crazy busy. Which is a little tricky with family Halloween costumes and birthdays. But I was happy make this one morning with a good friend. And did I mention it makes your house smell amazing??? You are going to want to give this recipe a try.

We love to put it on toast, sandwiches, ice cream, or muffins. Really the ideas are endless. My kids are big fans of pear. It’s the only lunch approved fruit this season. They were a little bummed I made them wait to eat these pears till after I took some pictures. And I probably took too many pictures. But I found these adorable kitchen towels from World Market and I was having too much fun. Green is such a happy color.

Ingredients

  1. 4 1/2 cups mashed ripe pears
  2. 3 tablespoons powdered fruit pectin
  3. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  4. 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  5. 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  6. 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  7. 1/4 cup lemon juice
  8. 7 1/2 cups white sugar
  9. 1 teaspoon butter
  10. 8 half-pint canning jars with lids and rings, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Mix pears, fruit pectin, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large heavy pot; bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  2. Add sugar all at once, stirring, and bring back to a full rolling boil. Boil for 1 minute. Mix in butter to settle foam.
  3. Sterilize the jars and lids in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Pack the pear jam into the hot, sterilized jars, filling the jars to within 1/4 inch of the top. Run a knife or a thin spatula around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a moist paper towel to remove any food residue. Top with lids, and screw on rings.
  4. Place a rack in the bottom of a large stockpot and fill halfway with water. Bring to a boil and lower jars into the boiling water using a holder. Leave a 2-inch space between the jars. Pour in more boiling water if necessary to bring the water level to at least 1 inch above the tops of the jars. Bring the water to a rolling boil, cover the pot, and process for 10 minutes.
  5. Remove the jars from the stockpot and place onto a cloth-covered or wood surface, several inches apart, until cool. Once cool, press the top of each lid with a finger, ensuring that the seal is tight (lid does not move up or down at all). Store in a cool, dark area.

Notes

  1. I love using my food processor to mash my pears. And usually I like to double this recipe so I can have an extra hostess gift on hand.
