A new twist on everyone’s favorite green bean casserole. French-style green beans, a creamy cheese sauce and topped with crunchy potato sticks.
Recipe originally posted October 2017, photos and recipe updated October 2018, updated again November 2020.
My favorite part of any holiday meal as a kid was my Mom’s green bean casserole. I never knew that my Mom’s recipewas different than the classicrecipe becauseI’ve never had it any other way.
I was shocked to find out that most people don’t eat cheese in their green bean casserole, and that’s just not right! So I’m here to sharewith you the BEST green bean casserole recipeyou’ll ever try.
Gluten-Free Cream Of Mushroom Soup
Becauseit is one of my favorite side dishes for the holidays, it was the first one I modified to be gluten-free. Over the years, I have usedseveral brands of gluten-free cream of mushroomsoups (Progresso, Pacific Organic).
I have had to make adjustments to the recipebecausesome brands are very watery. It left my belovedcasserole being too soupy (I still ate it anyway).
Pacific OrganicCream of Mushroom Soup was one of the brands that I like and have used it for years. But this year I finally decided that I would make homemade cream of mushroom soup and it turned out AMAZING!
You are going to love how easy my recipe for Gluten-Free Cream of Mushroom Soup is. I even included a dairy-free option, because most of us (me included) are also dairy-free as well.
How To Make Gluten-Free Greenbean Casserole
Preheat your oven to 350 ° F. Spray the gluten-free cooking spray into a casserole dish (I like olive oil cooking spray).
Drain the two cans of the French-style green beans and pour them into the casserole dish. Sprinkle onion powder over green beans. (photo 1)
Pour the gluten-free cream of mushroom soup over green bean mixture and stir to combine. (photo 2)
Add cheddar cheese and stir to combine. (photo 3)
Bake on the middle rack for fifteen mins. After fifteen minutes add the potato sticks and bake for an additional 15-25 minutes or until sides are bubbly and potato sticks are golden brown. Enjoy! (photo 4)
Store leftovers in an air-tight container and refrigerate. You can reheat the casserole in the microwave or oven.
Dairy-Free Cooking
I have also included a dairy-free option in the recipe. My husband, my youngest son, and I are all dairy-free. The dairy-free green bean casserole was made with my homemade gluten-free and dairy-free cream of mushroom soup and Daiya Cheddar Style Shreds or Volife Cheadder Spreads.
This green bean casserole can be easily made vegan as well. My recipe for cream of mushroom soup can be made with vegetable broth. All of the dairy-free options are also vegan.
Some of my favorite dairy-free alternatives that I like to cook with are unsweetened almond, cashew, or coconut milk. I also like baking with coconut oil or Earth Balance or Smart Balance butter.
If you can’t find gluten-free fried onions, you can use gluten-free potato sticks instead because I really like a salty crunchy topping. I also have a recipe to make your own in my traditional Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole recipe.
I was so happy to finally have my green bean casserole taste just like my Mom’s. There’s nothing like finally getting to have one of your favorite recipes modified to gluten-free tasting just like you remember it. Am I Right?!

I have made this recipe two times now and I absolutely love it! I added cubed ham to it the first time to give it more protein and used it as my own main entree one evening. Delicious!

We’ll have to give this a try for my son’s fiance. To get the fried onions last year my sister made some for her using thinly sliced shallots coated in
Seasoned potato starch. They were pretty close.Audrey says
