What is Brie Cheese

Brie cheese is a soft, creamy type of cheese that is made with cow's milk and has a mild flavor. Brie cheese originated in France but can be found all over the world.

It has been around for centuries because it tastes good and maintains its form when cooked.

It has an edible white rind which is considered to be a delicacy.

This variety of cheeses can be enjoyed on its own or used in cooking dishes like casseroles and quiches.

FAQs

Should you cut the rind off brie before baking in puff pastry? ›

The short answer is NO! While you are welcome to remove the rind if the look or texture is bothersome to you, you can absolutely leave the rind in this brie baked puff pastry recipe. In fact, we prefer to leave the rind on the brie so it holds its shape better as it bakes.

What is the secret to puff pastry? ›

Always preheat your oven for a minimum of 15-20 minutes before baking, because Puff Pastry depends on even heat to rise and puff. Place pastries 1 inch apart. If you want a flaky thin and crispy pastry that's not very puffy, prick the unbaked Puff Pastry all over with a fork, which lets steam escape while baking.

Do you take the paper off brie before baking? ›

No, you don't have to remove the rind before baking brie. The rind is edible and I don't even think you can taste it after the brie is baked. If you want to remove the rind, you can use a sharp knife to carefully cut off the thin rind of the cheese at the top of the wheel. This is easier to do when the brie is cold.

Why is my baked brie rubbery? ›

Don't overcook the Brie. Overcooking it, especially if you haven't cut the rind, may re-harden the cheese and make it tough and unpalatable.

Do you eat the crust on baked brie? ›

Brie rind is edible, and it actually adds nuance and complexity of flavor. In this baked brie recipe, I do not remove the rind because I need the surface to spread my jam and to add my beautiful nuts and toppings.

How long should brie sit out before baking? ›

Unwrap your Brie and place your wheel on a small piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. Note: if you have the time, take the cheese out of the refrigerator and let it sit on the counter for an hour before baking. This is optional but helps the cheese bake more evenly. Bake for 10-20 minutes in the oven.

Is butter or egg better on puff pastry? ›

The Los Angeles Times notes that butter can still be used as a "wash," but it yields different results than egg: Instead of imparting color or crispness, it offers a more luxurious flavor and softness.

What temperature do you bake puff pastry at? ›

Always bake Puff Pastry Shells in a preheated 425° F oven. Bake Puff Pastry Cups in a preheated 400° F oven for 20 minutes. Do not bake either Shells or Cups in a microwave or toaster oven. See our Tips & Techniques page for more baking tips for Puff Pastry Sheets, Shells and Cups.

Why do you put vinegar in puff pastry? ›

Vinegar is occasionally incorporated into puff pastry dough to hinder gluten development, leading to a more delicate and flaky pastry. It also helps regulate the dough's pH, impacting its texture and rise. Typically, only a small quantity of vinegar is required in the dough recipe.

How do the French eat brie? ›

The French will traditionally serve Brie with baguette or another crusty bread that won't compete with the cheese. Plain crackers are another convenient choice that won't detract from the cheese.

How do you know when brie is done baking? ›

Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (all oven types). Oven: Bake for 15 to 20 minutes (for 250g/80z), or until melted through. For 500g/1lb brie, increase to 25 minutes. To check, gently touch the centre of the brie – it should feel very soft, like it is about to collapse if you press any harder.

What happens if you over bake brie? ›

Be careful not to overbake the brie. The cheese can go from a melty lava-like texture to hard in the middle if it's in the oven for too long. Always bake on a piece of parchment paper as you will use it to transfer the brie from the baking sheet to your serving tray.

Do you remove the rind when making baked brie? ›

Keep the rind on, as it will help the cheese hold its shape so it doesn't all melt out. The rind is also edible, so you can enjoy it with the melted cheese, or simply remove the top layer after baking and dunk in crusty bread like a fondue.

Why does baked brie taste like ammonia? ›

It may be a turnoff but it's a consequence of aging, especially for bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie. As these cheeses ripen, their surface molds break down protein into amino acids and one byproduct of that breakdown is ammonia. When a Brie is aging at the creamery on a rack, the ammonia is evacuated through ventilation.

How to tell if brie has gone bad? ›

The first sign that Brie cheese has started to go off is its appearance: the moldy rind will start to go darker, developing dark gray patches. When you cut the cheese, you'll notice that the paste inside has gone hard and almost brown near the edges, close to the rind, and dark opaque yellow in the middle.

Are you supposed to remove brie rind? ›

Not only can you eat the rind, you should eat the rind. Technically, the rind is mold, usually Penicillium candidum, but it's good mold! The rind protects the cheese on the inside and helps to give the cheese its flavor. You're missing out on a big part of the flavor and textural experience if you do not eat the rind.

How do you cut brie before baking? ›

Instructions. Score the brie: Using a serrated knife, make parallel cuts across the top rind, spacing them about ½ inch apart, and cutting just through rind but not through the cheese.

Should you cut puff pastry before baking? ›

Don't press to hard here or your pastry might not puff as much — the goal is just to flatten it, not to actually roll it out. Cut and shape the puff pastry: Cut the puff pastry into whatever shapes you like, according to your imagination or a recipe that you're following.

Should I peel my brie? ›

Yes, you can. The skin, better known as the rind, on brie adds extra flavour and potency to the cheese. However, you don't need to if you find brie flavoursome enough on its own.
