Chiefs defeat the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII

Chiefs defeat the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII (1)

The Kansas City Chiefs have beaten the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona. The final score was Chiefs 38, Eagles 35.

The Chiefs victory was marked by 24 points during a truly epic second half.

After being down 10 at halftime, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes led Kansas City to a furious second-half comeback. With the score tied at 35, Mahomes led a time-consuming drive that culminated in the winning score.

The Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker hit the game-winning 27-yard field goal with seconds remaining in the game.

The comeback was even more remarkable considering Mahomes' situation at the end of the first half. He appeared to hurt his right ankle late in the second quarter. On a third down scramble, Mahomes was tackled around both of his ankles by Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards. The Chiefs signal-caller was in visible distress while he limped off the field and seen in agony while sitting on the Chiefs bench.

Mahomes finished the game with three passing touchdowns.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was brilliant in a losing effort. Hurts threw for a score and ran for three touchdowns - tying a Super Bowl record (Denver Broncos' Terrell Davis - Super Bowl XXXII).

Who's behind the "He Gets Us" ads for Jesus that are airing during the Super Bowl?

From CNN's AJ Willingham

He Gets Us,” a campaign to promote Jesus and Christianity, isrunning two ads during today's gameas part of a staggering $100 million media investment.

The group's content has been peppering TV screens, billboards and social media feeds since anational launch in 2022.

The campaign is arresting, portraying the pivotal figure of Christianity as an immigrant, a refugee, a radical, an activist for women’s rights and a bulwark against racial injustice and political corruption.

But certain details about the “He Gets Us” ads have set off alarm bells among young people and those skeptical of religion, two groups the campaignis specifically aimed to attract.

Some of the campaign’s major donors and its holding company have ties to conservative political aims and far-right ideologies that appear at odds with the campaign’s inclusive messaging.

Here are some of the takeaways, which you can read about in full here:

  • The campaign has connections to anti-LGBTQ and anti-abortion laws: The campaign is a subsidiary ofThe Servant Foundation, also known as the Signatry. According to researchcompiled by Jacobin, a left-leaning news outlet, The Servant Foundation has donated tens of millions to theAlliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal group. The ADF has been involved in several legislative pushes to curtail LGBTQ rights and quash non-discrimination legislation in the Supreme Court. And donors include Hobby Lobby co-founder David Green, whose company has famously been involved in legal battles on LGBTQ rights and contraception coverage.
  • The campaign is tied to evangelical churches: The group says it has no political affiliation or tie to a specific church denomination. But it has theological ties to evangelical practices, as well as financial ones. That includes its stated affirmation of the Lausanne Covenant, a unifying document in evangelical churches, and affiliations with prominent evangelical leader Billy Graham. In general, Christian evangelism is closely tied to conservatism and is an extremely influential force in American politics.
  • Some religious critics say the campaign is inauthentic: Word of the campaign has sparked enthusiasm among some Christian groups and influencers online. But other Christians, including those in the growingdeconstruction movementwho are reevaluating their relationship with religion, see red flags in some of the campaign's messaging, including an allusion to "cancel culture." Christians have also criticized the ads from a different perspective, saying it is too vague or de-emphasizes Biblical teachings.
