“You know you’re Greek when… you ate Greek yogurt before it became popular.”

The History of Greek Yogurt:

Greek yogurt isn’t actually from Greece. The first mention of yogurt in Greece was in 100BC, but it wasn’t a reference to the thick, creamy yogurt that we know as Greek yogurt today.

Traditional yogurt gained popularity in the U.S. in the mid 1900’s when Dannon brought yogurt making to the Bronx.

Greek yogurt is essentially yogurt that has been strained 3 times. It’s “strained yogurt.” fa*ge (a company started in Athens, Greece) was the first to put “Greek” on yogurt labels. Chobani (started in the US by a Turkish man) popularized the term.

“Actual” Greek yogurt (referring to yogurt that is made and sold in Greece) can be thick or thin. It’s just yogurt that is eaten in Greece.

Greek yogurt occupied 1 percent of the yogurt market in 2007; that jumped to 44 percent by 2013. “Once Greek became accessibly priced and broadly distributed and people understood Greek means high protein, they snapped it up,” says Peter McGuinness, president of Chobani. “There was this total Greekwashing,” with every major yogurt brand coming out with its own version of Greek yogurt. Today, yogurt that is branded as “Greek” accounts for about half of the 7.24 billion U.S. market.
